I created mysteries after observing an RE lesson where students had to find out what the teaching was from a series of clues and red herrings. I found it quite difficult to begin with to transfer this into maths. I usually teach this with a set of questions on the board that the students need to find the answers to. This allows for scaffolding, stretching and structure. I haven't attached the questions I use but if you would like them then I will provide!
